Omega-3 in fish oil can improve the quality of life for those with ADHD, rheumatoid arthritis, premenstrual syndrome & cramps, combats heart disease and fights depression
At risk of heart disease, run down, depressed, have pre-menstrual syndrome or menstrual cramping? May be you have trouble concentrating or have a poor memory – then you may be lacking in vital Omega 3 fats – which can easily be supplemented with fabulous fish oil.
Fish oil is extracted from deep sea, cold water fish and is known for its high levels of polyunsaturated omega-3 fats.
These particular fats are part of the deep sea fish’s survival mechanism, staying as a liquid in very cold temperatures.
As well as being important to deep sea fish, omega-3 fats (alpha-linolenic acid) are also essential to our own human body’s health, participating in the production of many important substances which direct the working of our cells and settle down inflammatory reactions. The only catch with omega-3 fats are they can’t be manufactured by our bodies, and therefore have to be eaten as part of a healthy diet.
One of the most important functions of fish oil is to support our hearts, protecting us against cardiovascular disease and heart attack. Fish oil relaxes blood vessels, minimises abnormal clotting and therefore our blood fat levels, lowering our heart disease risk.
Omega-3 fats are also a contributor to the control of inflammation so often seen in arthritis, as well as helping to minimise auto immune reactions. Disorders in which Omega-3 is beneficial include Crohn’s disease, lupus, atherosclerosis, asthma, colitis, eczema and as mentioned, rheumatoid arthritis.
Children with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) who have taken fish oil have also had reported beneficial results – improving their behaviour, helping them be calmer at school and less antisocial through its anti-depressant activity. Fish oil can help control hostility, violent outbursts and impulsive behaviours.
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) which is produced in the body through the help of the Omega-3 fats contained in fish oil is important for healthy nerve and brain function. During pregnancy DHA is passed from the mother to the baby in the womb to aid in the growth of the brain, nerves and sight, and as a result may see pregnant women become deficient – this deficiency has been linked to post natal depression.
Non-insulin dependent diabetics can also be helped through the use of fish oil, which can assist in weight loss and insulin function. It can also relieve pre-menstrual syndrome and cramping.
When purchasing fish oil it is important to check the standards for its purity. Try to pick a fish oil capsule which contains at least 1000mg of oil (per capsule), with 30 per cent of omega-3 fats
Reflux-free fish oils are available and there are also multivitamin supplements with fish oil which are also non-reflux. The combined fish oil and multivitamins are particularly useful as additional Vitamin E is recommended with regular doses of fish oil to help make sure the omega-3 fats remain viable in your body.
Recommended daily doses of fish oil are 3000mg for women, men and teens, pregnant women and those breastfeeding. Children aged from two to seven years should take 1000mg daily, while from seven to 13 years should take 1000-2000mg.
