The Perricone Promise is a 14 day program that focuses on anti-aging, anti-inflammatory benefits and may regulate insulin levels.
Dermatologist, and author of several diet books, Dr. Nicholas Perricone designed the Perricone Promise to combat the effects of aging. The foods on the Perricone Promise diet are intended to have anti-aging effects. The diet consists of fish, carbohydrates low on the glycemic index, such as beans, oatmeal, and leafy green vegetables, healthy fats, and 8 glasses of water a day. On the Perricone diet, five meals are eaten per day -- breakfast, lunch, dinner and two snacks. The Perricone diet recommends taking more than 25 supplements per day and using a variety of skin creams and lotions. These can cost more than $1000 a month and can be bought from Dr. Perricone's website. Dr. Perricone's favorite supplements include alpha-lipoic acid, chromium, omega 3 fish oil, and Coenzyme Q10. Although all of these supplements can be purchased through the Perricone website, many of them can also be purchased at drug stores for a much lower price. The Perricone diet helps to regulate blood sugar, build muscle, regulates metabolism, burns fat, promotes anti-aging and may prevent wrinkles. Diets high in salmon and berries contain lots of Omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to promote heart health and may help with depression. The Omega-3 fatty acids consumed on this diet prevent inflammation and may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Dieters may also see a reduction in cholesterol levels and blood pressure. There is a long list of foods to eat and foods to avoid on the Perricone diet. Dr. Perricone has a list of his top 10 "Super Foods" which includes wild salmon, extra virgin olive oil, foods from the allium family, and blueberries. Foods to Eat
Foods to Avoid
There are some risks associated with the Perricone diet. People who take anti-coagulants should speak with a doctor before beginning the diet. Because of the high levels of mercury in some fish, pregnant women should avoid the Perricone diet. Those with depression should also avoid the supplement DMAE that Perricone recommends as it may exacerbate their condition. This diet is not right for everyone. Due to the high cost of the supplements and lotions required for the Perricone Promise diet, this is not the diet for those whose only goal is weight loss. For those who want to slow the anti-aging process and lose weight this may be the right diet. Sources: WebMd.com, " What is the Diet Philosphy Behind the Perricone Promise?"
